I have taken a rough cut film opening of this group:
Jonathan Paris, Sophie Rasmussen and Bronwen Vaughan.
The opening scene starts with a blank screen and it stays on for 5 sec. After it fades to a new low angle shot of someone entering.
Mise-en-scene:
Lighting:
- dark and red, which has a connotation of hell.
- The lighting changes from the dark one to the bright when we move to the girls' house
- when the main character is at the street the lighting changes from yellow to blue which signifies that she is in danger as the lighting turns darker.
Costume:
- in the first scene we can see black boots
- that character is wearing a black hoodie and his hood is up which signifies that he does not want to show his identity, this connotes that he is a stalker.
Editing:
- Jump cuts between the two locations, girls house and underground.
- Transitions are added to alternate with two events.
Sound:
- Non- diegetic sound at the beginning, of leaking pipes, this has a connotation of underground, sewerage or abundant building.
- Followed by diegetic sound of a squeaky door and footsteps
- Non- diegetic music with a diegetic sound. While the character is walking and the ghost like sound being presented.
- Diegetic sound when the scene changes to the house and the bathroom
Location:
- Is dark and old, may suggest that it is an abundant building
- The house of potential central protagonist, bathroom, bedroom
Camera:
- A low angle shot of the door opening and someone entering the room
- Shaky footage at the beginning when the board is presented.
- Extreme long shot of the house
- The close up/ mid shot of the girl reaching the nail polish.
- Worms eye view shot with a sharp focus on the girl which then changes on her hand.
Stereotype/Counter-type:
- Stereotype of horror genre films is that a girl is the victim and in this film the girl is being kidnapped.
- The counter type is that the girl is putting on the red nail polish. By using commutation test we can tell that if the girl was blond she would not be smart and she would wear bright clothing. Here the girl is putting on the red nail polish which would be a stereotypical colour of the blond girl.
