Bridget Jones's Baby

Uses&Gratifications Theory
This movie is made to faith fill the Affective needs, such as satisfactions of their feeling such as happiness, sadness, sympathy and many more. As well as filling in their tension free needs which include watching it to get away from this world and get entertained.

Personal Relationship:

You have known Bridget as the real person and this is a continuity of your personal relationship with this character. Personal Relationship tells us that the old friend is back and most of things have changed, she is grown up and she has got a job she is sophisticated and business like.

Personal Identity:

There is almost 12 years between the last two movies. They would identify with the growing up with the Bridget Jones character. Audience may also identify with the wildness and the seriousness, such as conservative long dark blue dress. She is a character who has a strong gay men. Some gay man may identify themselves with her.  Audience may identify those characters to their youth and their past.
Women who relate to such problems us Bridget, being in a wring place at the wrong time, being clumsy and the fact that Bridget falls into the mud makes some women think that this may have happened to me.

Surveillance:

By watching this text you are being better informed.
Being informed what Bridget Jones is like in 2016. and what are the fashion trends?

Target Audience:

  • Females
  • 15+ (20-40)
  • Primary audience: like rom-com movies
  • Secondary audience: people who liked the book, the previous two movies, as well as being fans of Renee Zellweger, Patrick Dempsey and Collin Firth
  • Social class: B, C1, C2, D, E
  • 12 and 24 are the key audience for the movies because audience such as 30+ would not be able to be a mass marketing appeal as they are not the ones who go to the cinemas often. 12-25 are the audience who movie should be targeted. However, the use if language may change the target audience to the R rating. (15+)

Semiotic Analysis:

The teaser starts with an establishing shot of London showing the audience blue sunny day in London. This shot was used to create another point of view towards that audience. The stereotype of London is misty, lots of rain and you almost never get to see the sun. By showing London sunny and with a clear sky suggests that this movie is made by Working Title rather than Warp. The shot then cut to the next scene of Renee walking in the streets, wearing blue classical posh dress. This created the idea that in England people dress up posh no matter where they are. The shot then cuts to the animated scene of the "SHE'S BACK" in the same font and colour as the title. This colour connoted girlyness and tells us that this movie is targeted as females. Then we cut to medium shot of Renee at the concert and people picking her up as if she is a rock star she is wearing  patterned orange lose crop top. This shot connotes that Renee is the central protagonist of this movie even though the "Baby" word is used in the title which makes audience think that its about baby not her, the colour scheme is bright and colour full in this shot which connotes that she is free and wild. We then get this high angle shot of her falling into the mud which tells the audience that this movie is going to be funny as the two previous ones. Then we cut to the animated scene " AND SHE'S GOING TO BE" it is written is the same font and the same colours. Then we cut to her entering the room with kids which tells the audience that she is going to have a child. We then cut to Collin who was her partner is the previous two movies which tells the audience that he is going to be the father however it then cuts to the next scene of Patrick giving her the flowers which straight away confuses the audience of who the father might be. After we get an animated scene again "BIGGER THAN EVER" we then cut to Renee picking up little dress.

Improvements for the cut

Still camera clicking  get rid of that shot
A worms eye view layer it a bit
voice over for the corridor scene and some other scenes.
when Orla talks, put it a louder
put a few slams when the second slam is made
a camera movement when the 2nd push is made

Voice Over:

Geeky Girl: Every school has its mean girls, my school is one of them.

Meet Veronica, the princess, she is the one who rules everyone.

Here's everyone and ...

Then there is me

Geeky Girl inside the locker: The bell went should I get out?

Jackson (the new boy): To be honest?

Geeky Girl Inside the locker: I will get out

  • Production Companies
MiraMax
Universal Pictures
Working Title
Studio Canal
  • Budget?

$20m the exact budget information has not been released yet.

  • Distribution?

These are the distribution companies of BJDB, this source was taken form IMDb

  • Marketing?

The actors don't know the ending themselves so they can't spoil it. The ending has been shot already twice which is a great filming strategy.
The trailer was posted on the Ellen Show YouTube channel.

Target audience would be different it is similar but not identical to the two previous BJD. Its a rom com which means it targets female audience however, it does try strongly appear to men as well. The title is already telling a lot about the movie which is a point why a men audience would like to watch this movie since it is about a baby as well as the characters are old which does not quite appeal to the male audience.
Patrick Dempsey is an appealing actor, which may attract women but playing this character in BJDB movie makes him a bit less appealing.
There is a Male Gaze because Renee Zellweger is not as attractive and having a child.
The reason why most people would like to watch this movie because of the franchise of the previous two movies. People mostly watch it because if the comedy side of the film rather than the romance.
There is an intertextuality towards the first BJD. She is wearing the same cloth, the same dietetic/non-diegetic music.
The rating would be 15 in UK because of the swearing in the trailer. The swearing was used before in the other movies however not in the trailer.
There is an establishing shot in the trailer. In movies related to England usually filmed in London as it is counted as the posh location.
They had a shot of Ed Sheeran who attracted some of the younger female audience.
Glastonbury festival was shot of an array shot the iconic shot of it is muddy and dirty.
Another intertextuality for the cinderella, as the man puts on the her shoe.
"UP The DUFF" sign was made to show that she is pregnant. This is a pretty much English type of sign.
They have used the same font and colouring which is a franchise of the previous movies.

  • Release Strategy?

Its going to be released on the same day 16 September 2016 in UK and US which is quite unusual. UK would be the biggest target for the movie such as "Love Actually"
UK and US is first and then Europe etc.
The biggest market is america. They create posters and they will be shipped around.
Avatar made a wide world release and that was a bit risk as the same time the hit of that year.
This is the sign which was used on the US trailer presented by Ellen Show

This sign was used in the UK trailer which was used in Working Title website.

Those two signs were used to appeal to the both countries.

Rough Cut 4

Bellow is the final cut of our film opening. Which we have created we still need to add music to it but we have finished editing the footage.
On the second video below we added music, however the cut of the music didn't save in final cut and we imported the video with the whole music all the way until the end. This video is 3.48 min but our final cut is 2.49 min. The rest is the music which was not trimmed.

The video below was edited by Riona. If you look at the first cut I focused on the bags falling and added mean girl at the end where as Riona focused on mean girl.

This is a cut which I have made which was mainly focused on the bags and the bang they have produced. The lighting is different as well because I was trying to blend the different lightings in the corridor which was caught in our cameras. This also has a pinkish effect which makes the shot more soft.

This cut was made by Riona which is focused on the mean girl. As you may notice the lighting is different as well. Riona's version is more vibrant in colours and has a sharp focus, this was made to create more of a rom-com effect.

For this cut we have used a lot of layering. We have used about 8 layers for the scene where the split screen was made between the boy and the girl.
Here you can see how the pattern is girl box girl where as on the one bellow the pattern is boy girl boy. For this we have used 8 layers and one transition.

Our Journey

I have initially planned to work by myself because I was the only person in my class who decided to do rom-com genre. I have planned to create a film where there would be a central protagonist who would be the outsider in school.
The mean girl who would be my antagonist. She will make fun of the girl and ends up embarrassing her infant of the whole school when my central protagonist gets in a really bad position she wakes up and all the embarrassment which she has faced before turned to be her dream. After pitching my idea I looked thought the other genres which were presented by the other students and ended up working with Riona Drangsfeldt which has a genre Drama, Music. We shared our ideas in more detail and blended two ideas creating a new concept for the movie. We came up with an idea calling the movie TBH which stands for "To Be Honest"
We have then planned everything including, schedule, actors, storyboard, etc. We filmed everything in November but we understood after adding all the bits and pieces together that the footage was shaky, there were quite a lot jump cuts as well as the opening was too long, overall it was about 6 minutes long. So we decided to change the idea once again.
These are the samples of the fist draft. We originally had three girls and two boys: one mean girl, one geeky girl, tomboy, popular boy and his best friend.

Since the film opening was too long and we would have to reshoot somethings we decided to have one mean girl, two of her best friend, geeky girl who is our central protagonist, the popular boy and the new boy who is the potential popular boy in school.

We have now created film opening with a  length of 3 minute.

Working Title Rom-Com Genre Semiotics Analysis

17/03/16

Which genre is most associated with Working Title?
Rom-com

Four Weddings and a Funeral 1994 Working Title
Music is instrumental/classical and non-diegetic.
Lots of stars Hue Grant was almost unknown in this movie. Andy McDownell,  Rewan Atkinson, etc.
Archetype is an early example which becomes a stereotype/ and original stereotype which then becomes a stereotype.  Posh Southern English accents. Non-cocasian characters which follows up Richard Curtis's idea of Working Title films.
This is an american trailer and they cut out the key gay character. The american distributors were not comfortable with gay characters in the movie. As well as swearing words with was in the movie.
The movie had also a low budget of £2.8

The movie was not a success as the highest box-office was in Germany and it reached $1,061,769
The reason for this failure maybe that the target audience are females however, the movie is R rated for very string language, sex references and drug uses, which means that it is 15 rated in UK.  BBFC . Secondary audience were the ones who are into EMD music, however after seeing the movie audience were disappointed as there were barely any proper EDM and mostly nudity.

Marketing: This movie released a trailer in the cinemas and social media. News went were published thought magazines, TV shows, Twitter, Facebook.

Looking at the movie we can tell that this is a good example of Working Title films. It is well distributed, includes rich and wealthy people, does not have any fragments of social realism and has a starring Zac Efron. This movies target audience are females so having Zac Efron as their main character will attract female audience more. The secondary audience were the ones who are fans of music EDM. However, looking at the setting, characters and plot. This is an american movie about american characters which is not quite typical of Working Title films. This movie has nothing to do with England except the production company.

Warp v Working Title

Working title is mostly rom com genre
produces 130 -140 films or so.
Warp specialises on tv series now.
Working title are going towards the more commercial approach.
Warp: she a Chinese:(IMDb) a movie in Chinese about a Chinese immigrant in UK, available VAD and DVD. May have appeared in film 4. Was not presented the cinemas.

L(IMDb): greek movie, in greek language. British company producing movie in greek.
Costume drama appeals to the females, movie such as pride and prejudice.WT.
Expensive costumes, castles, queen. Huge american audience for that type of content.WT.
Artistic non-comercial type of movie would be featured in Warp.
Elizabeth 1998 was made by Working Title which was very successful as they targeted female american audience who like queens, costumes, castles. Cate Blanchett was featured in that movie and became a huge star because of that movie. Elizabeth was them franchised again in 2007: The Golden Age, which became well known as well.

Richard Curtis was a writer of many hits of Working Title films. Was a writer of Notting Hill, Love Actually, was also a director/writer of Bridget Jone's Diary and many more Working Title rom-com genre movies.

Posh, stuttering, beautiful blond girl. English, southern english character.
This strongly appeals towards female audience.
Westminster is a part of London. UK parliament is in Westminster. In Notting Hill they haven't featured even one coloured person.  In Britain you wouldn't say in the corner in Notting.
References Bridget Jones Diary scene.

About Time 2013
had a budget of 12m US dollars.
This film would fail bechdel test.
Distributor: Universal
Genre: Comedy
Sources: Box Office   IMDb
Auteur Theory in the tailer: "From the creators of Notting Hill and Love Actually"
almost all media which are primarily target the female audience tend to be critically dismissed. As low value, trashy popular culture.

Mise-en-scene: the bedroom is clean, big and comfy. They have a huge garden where as in warp movie such as This is England was a complete opposite of this.
Tha accent is different, posh English.
The boy had a single parent when we know that his dad might be dead. Where as in this movie it starts with introducing his family to the audience.

auteur theory: when the director influences the film so the filmmaker becomes the author of the movie.
digitisation: The replacement/conversion of dialogue and analogue with digital format.
Analogue is more time consuming and expensive.
Shane Meadow wanted to show how he could make a digital film. Digitally edited, filmed and distributed.  Le Donk And Scor-Zay-Zee does not have a print and it is made only digitally.

Semiotic Analysis of 16s clip

Mise-en-scene
The lighting is blue and a bit dull, the lighting is constant thought out the 16 sec. intertextuality of the film "Hallowing".
The other antagonist "the villain" is wearing a black hoodie with a hood up as well as a creepy mask. The mask is covered in red paint which has a connotation of blood and danger. The black hoodie connote that this person is a stalker and hides himself.
The light was lit behind her which makes her a bit bit.
The scene is set at night which denotes that she is a venerable

Cinematography
A extreme long shot of the central protagonist. This was made to show the audience that she is the one everyone should focus on as well as letting where and when the shot was taking place at. Centrally framed to show that she is the key character. To make is more outstanding they coulee placed her on the edge of the frame which will make the action happen at the back.
A point of view shot was made to show the perspective of stalker.
Medium shot go the protagonist walking. This was made to show the person following behind her.
Hight angle to show the shadow of the central protagonist and the key see is venerable.
Panning the camera to the left towards the follower which a typical convention of horror genre.
Close up of her face screaming to show her emotions to the audience and pass on her fear.

Sound
exaggerated diegetic sound of a heart pumping which signifies that the character is scared and to create tension.
Ambient sound is missing as we can't hear the footsteps as we can only hear the heartbeat.
diegetic sound of the central protagonist screaming this signifies that the central protagonist is being kidnapped without actually seeing the action.

Editing
lots of cuts
When a point of view shot is made and changes to a extreme long shot the antagonist is moving in point of view shot but stops at the extreme long shot.
Blue filter/hue

The scene begins with the central protagonist walking town the street. The camera is placed in the centre  and tightly framed so the audience could see the key character. She is walking slowly and does not seem to be in a hurry. In terms of light it is blue and a bit dull. The blue lighting creates intertextuality of a movie "Halloween".  This straight away tells us that the movie is horror genre.

The scene then changes to a point of view panning shot which starts with close up of the rocks and pans towards the central protagonist, this signifies that the person whose point of view it is may be the potential antagonist. From this shot we can tell that someone is following the girl. In terms of editing the  panning is not smooth as well which tells the audience that this is a point of view.

Gwen Alien Kiss semiotic analysis form 31-1.00

31-1.00 sec

The clip beings with  camera on a medium shot, this was made to tell the audience that the girl with dark hair is the central protagonist. a central protagonist picking up the girl. The camera tilts up as the central protagonist picks the girl up.
As the central protagonist calls out the name of the other girl, the camera cut to a medium close up. This is made to create a sudden action between those two characters. As the two characters kiss the camera jump cuts to a different scene with a different location. We get a long shot of the room filled with compeers and new technology, this was created to tell the audience where are they. We can see three other people, however the camera the focused more on the man with a red shirt on.
We them get a close up of the monitor screen. On that screen we can see our central protagonist kissing the girl. The camera then cit to a medium close up of the man wearing red shirt. The camera pans toward the man as he says down to watch the two girls kissing. From here we can say that this man features Male Gaze as he watches the two girls kiss. The camera them jump cuts to a medium shot of the girls kissing as the central protagonists says "okey..."and calls her an alien. After is creates shot reverse shot which had a close up of the central protagonist taking the control over the alien. The close up was made to show the dominance of the central protagonist.

mise-en-scene:

  • Lighting: the lighting is vey dark, this has a connotation of mystery which was made to create narrative enigma.
  • When denoting the lighting  of the second location,  the audience can pick on the lighting changes to a light and at the same time dark with a bit of blue colour. The connotations of blue lighting is future and fantasy.
  • Costumes: Our central protagonist is wearing dark clothing which suggests that she is not into fashion and is different from all the other girls. She has dark hair which tells us that she is not an ordinary girl.
  • The man where as is with dark hair and waring simple clothing which makes him seem as an outsider because if we use commutation test we can tell that if he was blond he would've been more attractive if he was in a suite he would've been more power position.

Assessing the other groups film opening rough cut

I have taken a rough cut film opening of this group:
Jonathan Paris, Sophie Rasmussen and Bronwen Vaughan.

The opening scene starts with a blank screen and it stays on for 5 sec. After it fades to a new low angle shot of someone entering.

Mise-en-scene:

Lighting:

  • dark and red, which has a connotation of hell.
  • The lighting changes from the dark one to the bright when we move to the girls' house
  • when the main character is at the street the lighting changes from yellow to blue which signifies that she is in danger as the lighting turns darker.

Costume:

  • in the first scene we can see black boots
  • that character is wearing a black hoodie and his hood is up which signifies that he does not want to show his identity, this connotes that he is a stalker.

Editing:

  • Jump cuts between the two locations, girls house and underground.
  • Transitions are added to alternate with two events.

Sound:
  • Non- diegetic sound at the beginning, of leaking pipes, this has a connotation of underground, sewerage or abundant building.
  • Followed by diegetic sound of a squeaky door and footsteps
  • Non- diegetic music with a diegetic sound. While the character is walking and the ghost like sound being presented.
  • Diegetic sound when the scene changes to the house and the bathroom

Location:

  • Is dark and old, may suggest that it is an abundant building
  • The house of potential central protagonist, bathroom, bedroom

Camera:

  • A low angle shot of the door opening and someone entering the room
  • Shaky footage at the beginning when the board is presented.
  • Extreme long shot of the house
  • The close up/ mid shot of the girl reaching the nail polish.
  • Worms eye view shot with a sharp focus on the girl which then changes on her hand.

Stereotype/Counter-type:

  • Stereotype of horror genre films is that a girl is the victim and in this film the girl is being kidnapped.
  • The counter type is that the girl is putting on the red nail polish. By using commutation test we can tell that if the girl was blond she would not be smart and she would wear bright clothing. Here the girl is putting on the red nail polish which would be a stereotypical colour of the blond girl.

RC N2

Rough Cut 2

Bellow is the rough cut of our film opening which we created on Final Cut Pro
We still need to add on and take out some scenes as well as correcting the diegetic sound.

Semiotic Analysis of Torch Wood

mise-en-scene - The female character is wearing black clothing which signifies that she is a shut down person who does not like to share with anything, she was wearing a buttoned up shirt which was helpful in one of the scenes where it unbuttons and shows her chest which once again objectify women. The other girl is wearing a school uniform which suggests that she is a student which signifies that the other characters may be students as well.  Alien/monster costume.
The dark lighting and cages connote that it is prison and when the girl in uniform screams as well when the alien pops out we can suggest that it is a prison for supernatural creatures.
editing - Lots of cuts.
sound- mysterious non-diegetic music which diegetic dialogue followed by.
camera - over the shoulder shots and hight angles to represent a camera watching the two girls. A close up of the alien is made after the midst of the girl wearing black. The alien pops out as the girl leans on the glass window.
Starts with medium close up shot.
stereotype/counter-type. Mid shots to show the body language of each character as well as facial expressions.
A girl is portrayed as a victim and a villain at the same time. The other girl where as is portrayed as a counter type a powerful strong character.

Verisimilitude: it appears of being a fantasy movie
Male Gaze: is a concept coined by feminist film critic Laura Mulvey. It refers to the way visual arts are structured around a masculine viewer. It describes the tendency in visual culture to depict the world and women from a masculine point of view and in terms of men's attitudes.
A term created by Laura Mulvey, it describes the way the visual arts centre around a masculine view point.
Binary Opposition:
Central Protagonist: is shown by getting a camera going back to her when every action is taking place.
Antagonist:

Master shot is when eventually is used the whole length most of the set is seen on.
Commutation Test: if not sure then imagine if something changes about the character what would change.
Normative is when something becomes an idea, a stereotype.
Counter hegemonic is when you challenge something which is more like an stereotype.
Mystery - intentionally holding on the setting. Narrative Enigma. Exposition.
1st 3 shots - one to a different angle - shot revenge shot.

Potential intertextuality: Intertextuality of the movie Silent of the lambs as there is a detective and a man on the other side of the cell. Where as here the girl wearing black clothing is on the other side of the prison. This is a classic horror scene of Silent of the lamb.

shallow depth of field. The focus is very sharp on the girl.
exposition: information about the narrative. mies-en-scene could be well used in exposition as it will give lots of details about the setting.
polysemy: many possible meanings of a word or a phrase.
anchorage: opposite of polysemy, clear preferred reading, providing all the details with camera shots, props, etc.

Editing: continuity editing:
shot reverse shot
jump cut
180 degree rule - when the camera is standing on the correct position. The same line.
